Eating Out: 新年快乐

To celebrate CNY I headed to The Only Chinese Restaurant In Town On The Bus Route That Serves Dim Sum (TOCRITOTBRTSDS). I don't drive so the On The Bus Route part is important. This is also generally considered the best Chinese restaurant in town though, such as it is. TOCRITOTBRTSDS is a typical Cantonese restaurant with a few tanks of lobster, crab and fish. The food is OK though sauces can be overly thickened with corn starch and thus less pristine than desirable, dumpling skins are thicker than they should be, but it's still the best game in this <250,000 population town in the Midwest. Other plusses: service is friendly and cheerful and their chilli in oil is flavorful and hot!

I had vegetables wrapped in beancurd skin, choy sum with oyster sauce, xiaolong bao and bean curd skin wrapped pork and vegetables. They have more adventurous dishes such as chicken feet and tripe but these aren't particular favourites of mine. Best things today were the veggies and bean curd skin with pork. The xiaolong bao were lacking in liquid and dried out really fast. I just think of them as pork dumplings, rather than real xiaolong bao. To finish I am presented two very dense fried dough balls covered in sesame seeds in honour of CNY, together with the usual fortune cookie. Four dishes are way too much for one person. Lucky I don't have a car and can get some exercise walking to/from bus stops.
