Fuel on a cold weekend

A frigidly cold weekend led to hibernation and consumption of endless cups of tea and the following:

Bonne Maman Pates de Fruits was my first experience of pates de fruits. I was expecting the sugary sweet rubbery fruit jellies of my youth, but these surprised me with their soft texture and and most importantly, their subtle pure fruit flavours. So far I've tried the quince, apple and blackberry and all have tasted of nothing more than fruit. A tinge of sweetness is present, but does not overpower their flavour. Also impressive for this not particularly haute brand was the packaging. Each 1-inch square jelly sat in an individual paper liner with 6 to a layer, each layer separated by a thick sheet of paper, 3 layers to a box. In general I am really impressed by this company's products. For a large corporation, they use mainly "real" ingredients and their products have a surprisingly homemade taste.

Griffins Vitalife Blackcurrant Digestives are a lowfat version of digestives. These seem crispier and less buttery (if digestives can ever be said to be buttery) than the digestive of my memories ie Arnott's Digestives. I have fond memories of dipping these in tea and fishing soggy bits out of the bottom of the teacup. For some reason my family only ever bought Arnott's digestives so they became my archetypal Digestive. Digressions in shape, size and additions just seem so wrong. My first exposure to the complete range of digestives was in Vancouver, and while I really miss Digestives, which do not seem to be a popular import into the US market, I just could not bring myself to believe any of these would taste like actual Digestives and so passed on getting any. Anyway these lowfat ones are OK, but will never be Digestives to me.

For more biscuit reviews, see NiceCupOfTeaAndASitDown.com. One of my favourite sites though I'd like to see them expand their European and Asian coverage but appreciate the supply problems. And how come Jaffa cakes are not biscuits, but KitKats are?
